What they arrived with

R G Peate has looked after families across Montgomeryshire and Shropshire since 1978, from Salop Road in Welshpool, often several generations of the same family. Geraint Peate founded the business and still arranges funerals, with Anne beside him, and Bethan Davies-Peate became a director in 2025. The phone is answered by the family, at any hour. Their website was a standard template, owned and run by Yell. The brief was a site worthy of the family, and it came with a legal duty attached: the Competition and Markets Authority's Funerals Market Investigation Order requires a Standardised Price List, set out properly.

The real constraint

Two things shaped everything, and they pull in opposite directions. The site has to serve people on one of the hardest days of their lives, which asks for calm, few words and nothing clever. It also has to meet the CMA's rules on price transparency, which ask for a full, itemised and comparable list of charges, in the regulation's own prescribed words. Neither is optional. The design had to hold both, gently, without letting either one undermine the other.

The thinking

Three decisions carried the project.

  1. Begin where the family is. Someone has died, someone is dying, or someone is thinking ahead: the home page starts with those three, with the funeral notices beside them. The guide to the first hours and days covers a death at home, in hospital or a hospice, in a care home, a sudden death and the coroner, a death abroad and the loss of a baby or child, and it says plainly that nobody needs to call first.
  2. The phone comes first, and the family answers it. Every page carries the right number for the hour: the office until five, then the out-of-hours line, changing over by itself at eight in the morning and five at night. Either way, a member of the family answers.
  3. Every price published, in the regulation's own words. The Standardised Price List is a page as well as a PDF, every line in the CMA's prescribed wording with the family's plain English beneath it, and the fees other people set listed beside it, passed on at cost. An estimator works out the funeral you have in mind, item by item, without asking for a name and without sending anything anywhere. A regulation becomes a quiet reason to be chosen.

The build

Every page is prepared in advance, so it arrives at once. Every price comes from a single file, so the price list, the estimator, the home page and the coffins page can never disagree, and a fact still waiting for the family to confirm is marked in the code, where no update can be published until it is settled. The contact form works with or without JavaScript. Newsreader, Source Serif 4 and Inter are set on cream, moss and sandstone, with Welsh beside the English in the mark and the headings. The drawings of the places families know are set in the brand's own ink, with an engraved fade at their edges. Structured data and a plain summary written for AI assistants tell search engines, and the assistants people now ask, exactly who the family are and where they work, and every page is checked for accessibility, headings, overflow and broken links.

Contact sheet

  1. R G Peate's prices page: the attended funeral at £2,350, its lines in the CMA's wording, starting with the legal and administrative arrangements at £1,300, beside a box offering to estimate the cost.
1 · Price listThe Standardised Price List as a page, each line in the regulation's own words with plain English beneath.
  2. The Estimate the cost of a funeral page, asking What kind of funeral? with a service chosen, beside a running estimate of £3,254 that begins with arrangements, collection, care and viewing at £1,300.
2 · EstimateThe cost of the funeral you have in mind, item by item, without a name or any details asked for.
  3. The guide to what to do when someone dies, headed Three things, in your own time, with numbered steps beside a moss green card giving the out of hours line, answered by a member of the family.
3 · First hoursWhat to do in the first few hours, three things in your own time, with the family's number beside them.
  4. The about page, headed The people who will look after you, with cards for Geraint Peate, Anne Peate and Bethan Davies-Peate, and the extended family below them.
4 · The familyThe family by name, and the people who work beside them, so a caller knows who will answer.

The left and right arrow keys move between frames, and with Command or Control held they go to the first or the last. Escape puts the frame back.
