What they arrived with

A lifelong dream, and a teacher who had earned it. Elle Peate spent fifteen years in Welsh classrooms, including as an assistant head teacher in Cardiff, before founding Cultivate, the education consultancy elsewhere in this catalogue, and she holds the highest Forest School and childcare qualifications. She arrived with a lovely name, Footprints in the Forest, and the whole of a forest school ahead of her: the first sessions to plan, and the first families to welcome.

The real constraint

Families choosing a first setting for a two-year-old want to picture the days before they ever visit: who Elle is, how many grown-ups there will be, how the fire, nap time and the toilet tent work, what happens when it rains, and who is waiting at home time. So every one of those questions is answered, warmly and in plain words, and families arrive already feeling at home. And Footprints grows the way the best small places always have, by word of mouth, one family telling the next, with every child's day kept for their own family to enjoy.

The thinking

  1. Drawn as a field notebook. Pen-and-wash drawings on warm paper, some taped in a touch askew, handwritten notes in the margins and small footprints walking between the sections. The site looks like the notebook a child at Footprints keeps, so it feels like the woods before anyone has visited.
  2. The questions families ask, answered first. Who Elle is and what she is qualified to do. How the days go in the rain, at nap time and at the toilet tent. Who collects at home time (only the grown-ups a family names, each with a password word agreed in advance), and who steps in if Elle is unwell: a second qualified leader the children already know. Every answer is warm and plain, and the certificates are there to see.
  3. Two promises, written down. Footprints stays off social media altogether and grows by word of mouth, and every child's day is kept for their own family: the promise has a page of its own, dated and signed by Elle. The day's photographs go to the Den, a private place for each family that opens with the first sessions, with its rules published before a single picture is taken. Each parent sees their own child, and a photograph with friends in it reaches only their families, and only when every family has said yes.
  4. Small delights that each do a job. The real forecast for the woods every day, with what it means for wellies and when it gets dark. A library card for every child, stamped in purple ink when a book goes home for the weekend and again when it comes back. Footprints that follow a finger across the page and fade like mud. And a funding checker that works out what help a family might get, with every answer staying on the page.

The build

The founding families list is the first thing that takes a name: a few gentle questions, then the owl brings a six-digit code to the inbox before anyone is added, and the list sits safely behind the database's own locks. The checker, the library card and the footprints all work inside the page. The pen-and-wash drawings, the footprints and the ink logo are all set in the brand's own ink, with Young Serif heading the pages, Atkinson Hyperlegible Next carrying the text and Caveat writing the margin notes. The motion plays once, and stays still for anyone who prefers less. The exact meeting point in the woods is shared with booked families, and word of mouth gets a helping hand too: four cards on a sheet to print and pass on, and a share button made for sending to one friend at a time.
